The key to our protocol lies in its simplicity and accessibility. We equip our clients with a series of gentle jaw exercises and self-care techniques specifically designed for TMJ dysfunction relief. By incorporating these practices into their daily routines, patients can experience the benefits of pain reduction and increased mobility
Understanding TMJ and Fascial Restrictions
Fascia is a specialized connective tissue that surrounds muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons, organs, nerves, arteries, and veins throughout the body. It offers support and reduces friction during movements. It is continuous from head to toe, without interruption. Fascial restrictions can lead to pain, decreased range of motion, and impaired function. When fascial restrictions occur in the muscles and tissues around the jaw, neck, and shoulders, it can lead to TMJ dysfunction. Symptoms might include pain, difficulty chewing, and more.
Potential Causes of Fascial Restrictions in TMJ:
The jaw, like every other part of the body, is surrounded by fascia. This fascia can become tight or restricted due to a variety of factors such as:
Physical Trauma: Injuries affecting the jaw, neck, or distant body areas can influence fascial tension and contribute to TMJ issues.
Emotional and Physical Stress: Stress often leads to physical manifestations, such as clenched jaws or grinding teeth, causing fascial tension around the jaw.
Surgery or Extended Mouth Opening: Extended durations of mouth-opening, like during dental procedures and surgery, can strain the jaw and surrounding fascia.
Poor Posture: Forward head posture or rounded shoulders can impact the jaw's alignment and function, affecting fascial dynamics.
Trauma: Direct trauma to the jaw or side of the face can result in TMJ dysfunction. Impacts, like from accidents or sports injuries, can lead to TMJ dysfunction.
Teeth grinding and clenching: These habits, especially during sleep, can overwork the TMJ and the surrounding muscles. Over time, this can lead to joint wear and inflammation.
Excessive gum chewing or nail biting: Habits that consistently engage the jaw muscles can contribute to TMJ pain or dysfunction.
Dental Issuess: Misaligned teeth or bite problems (malocclusion) can change the way the upper and lower jaw come together, potentially leading to TMJ issues. Sometimes, dental work, such as extractions or orthodontic treatment, can also inadvertently alter the bite and strain the TMJ.
Arthritis:: Inflammatory disorders like osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis can affect the TMJ, leading to pain and limited motion.
Connective Tissues Disorders: Diseases impacting connective tissues can also affect the TMJ.
Hypermobility: An overly flexible TMJ might be more prone to displacement and stain, effecting.
How Fascial Release Assists with TMJ Relief:
The MANNA Method addresses these issues head-on by targeting the fascia with a series of release techniques, promoting circulation, enhancing movement, improving alignment, reducing pain, and offering relaxation—all pivotal for TMJ relief.
Reduced Tension: Fascial release techniques aim to gently stretch and realign the fascia, breaking up adhesions and reducing tension. This can lead to decreased pain and increased mobility in the jaw.
Improves Circulation: By breaking up fascial restrictions, circulation to the surrounding tissues is improved, promoting healing and decreasing inflammation.
Enhances Movement: Releasing tight fascia can help restore natural movement patterns. This is particularly important for the complex series of movements involved in jaw function.
Addresses Remote Influences: TMJ dysfunction can sometimes be influenced by fascial tension in distant parts of the body, such as the neck, shoulders, or even the pelvis. A holistic fascial release approach can address these interconnected areas, leading to comprehensive relief. A holistic approach addresses interconnected body areas for comprehensive relief.
Promotes Relaxation: TThe process of fascial release can be therapeutic and relaxing. This can indirectly help TMJ issues, especially if they are exacerbated by stress.
Increased Mobility: By addressing tightness in the fascia, individuals might experience improved jaw mobility and a reduction in locking or clicking sensations.
Prevention: Regular fascial release, especially in those with risk factors for TMJ disorders, might help in preventing the onset or recurrence of symptoms by maintaining healthy tissue dynamics.
